    • Academics: Students will engage in academic lessons every school day. They will receive a balance of literacy lessons, including phonemic awareness, concepts of print, writing and beginning reading skills. They also will receive instruction in math, science, social studies on a rotating schedule throughout each school week.
    • Assessments: Assessments are essential to our program. They allow us to see growth in every student, as well as, potential areas of concern. Your child will take a formal assessment three times a year and participate in many informal assessments throughout the school year in the form of teacher made assessments and observational notes. All assessments will be used to create lessons to ensure academic growth for everyone
    • Attendance: Students are required to attend school every day of the calendar school year for the entire full day program. (See Parent Handbook for School and District Attendance Policy)


    • Bathroom Breaks: Students will be allowed to use the restroom in the classroom as needed. We will take a whole class bathroom break right after lunch to ensure every student has had the opportunity to use the restroom before rest time.

    All pre-k students are expected to take care of their toileting needs. Teachers will only assist with difficult belts, buttons or snaps.

    • Birthdays: Birthdays are special days! If you would like to send in treats for your child’s birthday, please contact me in advance, so we can work together to make arrangements. On these special days store packaged only, cupcakes, cookies, cookie cakes and/or ice cream will be permitted as snack.
    • Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the classroom every morning from 7:05-7:30 a.m. Please have your child at school by at least 7:15 a.m. to allow them plenty of time to eat.


    • Communication: Daily communication is an important part of your child’s success in school. A daily folder will come home with your child every day. This folder will be used for home- school communication. Please check this folder daily, view the behavior calendar and initial. Also, look for important school information. Such as PTO events/fundraisers, school events, field trip info, etc. These folders are a great way for you to share information with me, too.
    • Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences will be held twice a year and on an “as need” basis, if there are teacher or parental concerns
    • Counselor: We do have a counselor on staff at Olympia. If you have any concerns or need community assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. We are here to help.


    • Dismissal: Your child will be walked to the designated area for how you choose for him/her to get home. Walking, bus rider or car rider. Please let me know how your child will be going home, if you need to make a change, please send in a handwritten note or contact me through text or DOJO by at least 2:15. No child will be dismissed, walker, car rider or parent pickup, to an individual not listed on your approved pickup list in the office. He/she also must show identification. Also, no child will be released to a parent or authorized pickup person, unless they are in possession of the blue Olympia pickup card, which you have received in your child’s folder.
    • District Information: District information and parent portal can be found on our website judsonisd.org
    • DOJO: This is a great website/app. to stay in touch with me. You also will receive communications from me through DOJO. I will be using it to share class information (newsletters, pictures, etc.). You will receive a flyer in your child’s folder with an invitation code to use to sign up for my class DOJO
    • Dress Code: Olympia is not a uniform school, but there is a dress code. Please refer to the district and school dress code policy. Please be aware of P.E. days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) and make sure your child is wearing athletic shoes. Also please consider shorts under dresses for female students. They will be sitting on the floor and playing on the playground equipment.
    • Dropoff: Drop off for students will be in the front hall. Our wonderful Pre-K assistant will be there to help your child find his/her way to the classroom. You will need to walk your student into school if you are dropping him/her off in the front of the school building. If you are dropping your child off through the car rider line at the back of school, the teachers will help them to the front hallway of the school to Mrs. Goolsby)


    • Expectations: At Olympia we have high expectations for all students. We expect all students to meet these expectations and will work with each individual child to help him/her be successful, academically and socially. We also have high expectations for faculty, staff, and parents. We are all here to help your child be the best he/she can be. In pre-k, we have the motto “In pre-k, you can do anything!” This means that we expect the children to try their best before seeking help. For example, when buttoning their pants or opening their milk at breakfast/lunch, as well as academically, when writing, drawing, counting, etc. I will always be there to guide and help, however, your child will feel more accomplished when he/she completes a goal/task on his/her own.  



    • Family: Family support is important. Please find ways to support your child academically and socially at home and at school. Consider volunteering, attending after school events/activities and participating in fundraisers and academic programs (science/math/reading nights)
    • Field trips: We will be taking at least two field trips this school year, possibly three. One trip will be the San Antonio Zoo in the fall and the other field trip will be to the McKenna Children’s Museum in New Braunfels in the spring. We will be asking for parent volunteers, so please consider joining us for one or both field trips
    • Friends: Building friendships is important for children and there are several stages in the development of friendships throughout childhood. More friendship information will be sent throughout the school year. However, there is sometimes an expectation that all children must be friends with all other children. In our classroom, we will discuss what it means to be a friend and what it means to be kind. The expectation in our classroom is you do not have to be friends with everyone, but you must be respectful, and you must show kindness.
    • Fun: School is a fun place to be and learning is fun no matter your age. We will have fun in our classroom and even though it may only look like play, we are learning.
    • Fundraisers: There will be opportunities during the school year to participate in fundraisers. These fundraisers are for the benefit of every student and we greatly appreciate all the effort the PTO and our entire school community puts into make each one a success


    • Grades: Grades will be given every nine weeks. Pre-k students do not receive traditional letter or number grades. The grading key for pre-k is based on student growth and areas in need of improvement.


    • Homework: Homework will not be given to pre-k students on a daily or weekly basis. The only homework I ask you to do with your child every night is read. Yes, just read because, reading to your child is so beneficial. Please add this one simple step to your child’s bedtime routine. You will setup a lifelong love of reading and academic excellence.  


    • Illness: While we want every student present at school every day, there maybe times when your child is ill. If he/she has a fever, please keep him/her at home. The guideline is fever free for 24 hours. Please follow this guideline, if your child has a fever of 99+. If your child is out due to illness, please write an absence excuse letter or send in doctor’s note.
    • Independence: One of the most important components of pre-k is to foster independence in every child. We encourage our students to take an active role in their learning and all that entails, from taking care of their own materials and needs to completing task on their own.

    • Kindness: Kindness is important to me as a teacher. I will model kindness and embrace the opportunity to teach kindness throughout the school day. Kindness is key to building a positive community classroom, where every student feels safe and valued.






    • Library: Your child will participate in library every other Friday and will have the opportunity to checkout a book to bring home. Please add these books to your daily bedtime reading routine and return to school before the next library time. I will do my best to send out return book reminders through DOJO
    • Lunch: Lunch will be from 11:00 to 11:30. You can choose to have your child eat a school lunch or you may pack a lunch for him/her. If you choose to send your child with a lunch, please include nutritional foods with limited sweet treats. School lunches are set for pre-k based on federal government guidelines for preschool age children, so your child will not always have the same options as the older students. For example, all Pre-K students receive white milk with their lunch. Chocolate milk is not offered


    • Medications: All medications will be distributed by our Nurse (See Nurse info below). Please do not send medications to school with your child. This includes cough drops.
    • Music: We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend music class. Our music time will alternate with library on Fridays, so every other Friday we will have music.


    • Notes: Please send all notes in the daily folders. If you have a note for the principal, secretary or nurse, we will make sure they receive it. This includes all absent notes from parent, doctor and/or dentist.
    • Nurse: Our school nurse is Ms. Gordon or Nurse Gordon. She will be calling you or sending you a note if your child needs her services, which could be for a fall, fever or other injury or illness.



    • Opportunities: There will be many opportunities for parents and families to participate and be involved in our school activities and programs. I know we are busy people, but there are many benefits for children when their family engages in their child’s school activities. The child feels a sense of pride and values the importance of school and academics, when they see that their parents and family value the school community. Please look for and take time to participate in these opportunities. We look forward to seeing you here.


    • Parent Center: The parent center is located on the Judson ISD website. This is the site where report cards will be distributed. There will no longer be paper copies of the report card. Please go to the Parent Center and register.
    • Parent Teacher Organization (PTO): Please consider being a member of our schools PTO. The PTO is an important part of our school community. They help raise funds for our school, individual classrooms, field trips etc. The PTO also host academic nights and other Olympia events. Many heads and hands are always needed and welcomed.
    • Parties: We will have two designated party days this school year. Our Polar Express/PJ Party on the last day before winter break and Valentine’s Day (more details will be made available closer to these holidays)
    • Physical Education: Every pre-k student will have the benefit of attending P.E. class three days a week. It will be part of our weekly schedule, so make sure you are aware of our P.E. days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) and please send your child in athletic shoes.
    • Projects:  I will be sending home a projects/activity for you to complete with your child. Most will follow a holiday theme or other important event occurring in our community or school. I will do my best to get all the information out to you a month before the projects are due. I only ask that you work with your child and due your best to complete these projects by the due date. We want all families represented!


    • Questions: Please, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me. The only thing I ask is that you text, email, send me a message through DOJO, or setup a conference time to do so. Thank you in advance
    • Questionnaire: Every parent will receive a questioner regarding your child. Please complete and return this to me in your child’s daily folder as soon as possible. This is just another stepping stone on my path to get to know your child the best I can.


    • Reading: Reading is so important for your child and as mentioned earlier in the homework section, please read with your child every night. While you are reading with them, you can focus on one letter and see how many times you can find that letter on each page and after letters you can try words. Asking questions during and after you read, helps children build their comprehension skills and make connections. When you read with your child, you are fostering a love a reading and learning.
    • Recess/gross motor: We have one 30-minute block of recess a day and another 45 of gross motor development Wednesday afternoon. We will do our best to include outdoor recess in our daily routine. However, there are times when this may not be feasible: weather, other school activities, etc. If the reason we cannot go outside is due to the weather, we will have gross motor activities in the classroom.
    • Rest time: As part of our full day pre-k program, students will be required to have a 45-minute rest period. At this time your child will only be required to bring one small blanket and travel size pillow and one small stuffed animal/doll that does not make noise-please.


    • Routines: Routines are very important for young children. They benefit for knowing what their day will look like and what to expect. I will do my best to follow the same schedule every day and address changes to the schedule with the children before any changes happen to avoid concerns and/or anxiety this may cause them.


    • Snacks: We will have a morning and afternoon snack every day. I will be creating a snack calendar each month, assigning each child to bring snacks for the class on a specific day. We love our snacks and ask that snack donation be of nutritional value. Some examples are snack crackers, apple slices, applesauce pouches, fruit, granola bars and pretzels. Please do not send sugary snack like candy or cookies.
    • Social Skills: Social Skills are an important part of our pre-k curriculum and are taught throughout the day. We learn how to communicate our thoughts and feelings, how to share, how to have empathy for others, understanding that everything we do has a consequence (which is not always a negative thing), how to be a good friend, how to be kind/show compassion, listening to others and respecting what they have to say (even though we may not agree). We also work on self-regulation and having control over our actions and emotions.


    • Time to think: This is an important part of learning in the social context. Students need to be able to step away and think about their actions in times of stress or disruption. There will be a designated safe area in our classroom for the children to go to when they need to be alone and think. I will allow a child in the Time to Think area adequate time to think and calm down and when he/she is ready, I will help them talk it out and come up with a way to solve the problem. This allows them time to think and creates an opportunity for me to teach social skills.
    • Toys: Students should not bring toys to school unless it is part of a class project. Such as show-n-tell, student of the day, etc.


    • Understanding: I do my best to get to know each student and I am here to help your child and you. So, if there is anything I can help you with or if you have a concern, please come to me, so we can have those conversations. This will allow me to provide the best environment for your child.
    • Unicorns: Yes, we are the Unicorns! #unicornsarereal


    • Vision: Every student matters every moment counts! This is Olympia’s Vision Statement and an integral part of our school community. We ask ourselves, teachers and students alike, every day, “How will you make every moment count?”
    • Volunteers: We love volunteers! Please consider the many volunteer opportunities offered at Olympia. We will need volunteers on Field trip days, Field Day, PTO Events and more. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, we would love to have you come as a guess reader/teacher. Make sure to check this box in the parent questioner. Volunteers must be completed the volunteer training through the Judson Website.


    • Watch D.O.G.S: Is another way for fathers (or other significant male role models) to volunteer at Olympia. D.O.G.S. stands for Dads of Great Students. Dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles and other important men in our students’ lives can work with staff and students to make our awesome school community better. Volunteers must be approved. Check the box on the questioner if interested and I’ll forward you more information.




    • eXtra set of clothes: Please send in an extra set of clothes for your child, including shirt, pants, underwear and socks. We will be storing these in the classroom incase of a potty accident or incase your child would need to change due to milk or syrup spill at breakfast or lunch
    • eXciting year: This is going to be a great school year. I am excited to be working with your child and you. We are going to make lasting memories and create an awesome learning environment. An environment, where your children will be supported in their growth and development, both academically and socially.


    • You: Parents you are an important person in your child’s development and learning. You have been your child’s first teacher and I am looking forward to working with each of you in making this first year of school a success. Together we can develop a love of learning in your child.


    • Catching Z’s: We are very busy in pre-k. Your child will be tired by the end of their school day. Please make sure, he/she has a set bedtime and routine to ensure adequate sleep for his/her age, which is 10-12 hours per night.
