The Band Directors at Metzger Middle School are hard at work meeting the next crop of beginning band students. Currently, incoming sixth grade students are scheduling instrument selection interviews with a band director inside the Metzger Band Hall. Students are given the opportunity to play all instruments available during the selection interview.
Assistant Band Director, Bryant Aynes says, “One of my favorite times of the school year is meeting our incoming 6th grade students and welcoming them into the Metzger band family. They have a blast getting to “test drive” each instrument. We work together as teacher and student to find the best fit for their success and that they enjoy making sounds on. Having the students’ eyes light up with excitement the first time they make a sound is truly a highlight of the year.”
One particular family, The Tripplett’s, are keeping Band in the family. Warren Tripplett, who attends Masters Elementary, came to the interview hoping to play the trumpet but left selecting the trombone. On why he selected trombone over the trumpet, Warren said, “The trombone mouthpiece was easier for me to buzz my lips.” Head Band Director, John Robertson added, “Ultimately, we want the student to select an instrument they are going to enjoy playing. In some cases, we even meet students with an unknown natural ability on certain instruments.”
Warren’s older sister, Anana is a three-year member of the Metzger Band. She is an accomplished musician herself having earned a chair in the prestigious TMEA All-Region Band both in 7th and 8th grade. She can’t wait to take her talents to the Wagner High School Band the next four years.
“Joining the Metzger Band, opens up an opportunity for growth musically, academically, and socially” says Julia Tripplett, Mother of Warren and Anana.
